NYT Sunday Puzzle – June 30, 2013

There are times when I get stuck filling in just one last square, so I set the puzzle aside for a while hoping that the answer will come to me. This was one of those puzzles. Sometimes the answer does come to me; other times, I finally give up and guess. In this case, it was the latter. Other than that, this was a fairly easy puzzle for me.

NYT Sunday Puzzle - June 30, 2013

Title: Matching Wits

All the theme answers are composed of two words the first beginning with an “M” and the second with a “W.” Also, the grid design reflects the theme with blackened spaces at the top forming an “M” and at the bottom a “W.”

2D. “Hoochie Coochie Man” singer = Muddy Waters
6D. West Point subject = Modern warfare
30D. 1962 movie for which Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke won Oscars, with “The” = Miracle Worker
52D. Euphemism used often on “The Newlywed Game” = Making Whoopie
68D. Dewer’s product = Malt whiskey
