Winter was tenacious! I kept saying to Michael, “I can’t believe I’m still wearing my winter jacket in May!” Then, suddenly, Mother Nature did a total about face, leaping past spring and going directly into summer. Last Wednesday, temps soared to near 90, hit 90 on Thursday, and have remained in the high 80’s. Rozy weather!
Usually, we wait until Memorial Day Weekend – the unofficial start of the summer season — to clean up the patio and hoist the umbrella. But considering the summery forecast, we figured why wait? So, we did it on Wednesday after returning from picking strawberries at Battleview Orchards, and had our first al fresco meal of 2016 in that afternoon.
When I turned on the gas grill, I thought at first it wasn’t working at all, but Michael determined that only one side of the burner wouldn’t light up. Since this gas grill was installed after Hurricane Sandy, I’ve been having it serviced each spring but hadn’t yet called for an appointment. So, we put in a call right then and there. Fortunately, until the grill guy can come, the one working side produces enough heat sufficient for my grilling needs.
We started with a Strawberry Salad dressed with a raspberry vinaigrette. Of course, these were berries we’d picked just a few hours earlier. Can’t be any fresher — or more delicious!
For the main course, Hamburgers accompanied by a Vegetable Medley.
Summer has arrived when I switch from drinking apple cider to my favorite lemonade.
On Thursday, I made a boatload of Strawberry Ice Cream.
On Saturday, Wendel’s crew did our annual spring clean-up. As usual, a stellar job!
Taking advantage of the gift of this fantastic weather, we’ve been spending time relaxing on the patio and having most of our meals there. Looking forward to doing a lot of both during the next few months.
